Fort Umpqua Days
With 36 of our WIN friends, we're camped along the Umpqua River in Elkton, Oregon, celebrating the town and the fur trading fort established here in 1836.
Volunteers are recreating the fort. While we were there, a new load of logs arrived.
The WINs pitched in debarking some.
This was the southernmost outpost of the Hudson Bay Company. On the grounds is an original flag from the fort.
Of course, there was a parade. Here are some of the WINs, dressed as pioneers, doing the Virginia Reel to a bagpipe tune. They even won first prize!
Randy, the French Fur Trapper. Diana thought he looked kind of dorky...
Lots going on at the festival grounds. Randy got a chance to philosophize with some mountain men.
The Umpqua River is lovely and great for kayaking.
We were parked next to a noisy flock of sheep and their "guardllama." He protects against coyotes. Some of the sheep wear clanking bells around their necks, and they must never sleep!
Also on the grounds was a butterfly pavilion, raising, feeding and ultimately releasing them to wing their way south.

How cool! Those clever WINs - what will they think of next. Sorry we missed it.
By the way, where did Randy get that gun? Is he licensed to carry?
We borrowed all the costumes, hats, shoes, and weapons from Trish, a member of our group. She is apparently a champion knife and tomahawk thrower and black powder gun shooter. We had to get permission from the town to carry all these working weapons, but they said "Sure!"
